A painter with a heart for people

Morgana Segovia is a commercial painter living in Vermont. Her days are spent transforming spaces — hanging off ladders, mudding and taping drywall, and putting in the kind of hard physical work most people avoid.

This April, she's taking those same hands and putting them to work for something bigger: rebuilding homes for families in Appalachia — people who have been forgotten by just about everyone else.

She'll be gone for 9 days. That means 9 days without a paycheck, but she's doing it anyway — because she believes some things matter more than a pay stub.

She's not great at asking for money (her words), but she's great at showing up when it counts. This is one of those times.

Red Bird Mission Work Camp

Red Bird Mission has been serving the people of southeastern Kentucky's Appalachian Mountains since 1921. The region faces chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing, and isolation that most of us can't imagine.

Through their Work Camp program, volunteers travel to Beverly, Kentucky to rebuild and repair homes for families in need — roofing, siding, plumbing, painting, wheelchair ramps, and more.

Morgana's crew will spend the week doing hands-on construction — repairing and rebuilding homes for local residents. They don't know which family they'll be helping until they arrive. On top of the build work, they're also bringing donated clothes, household goods, and supplies for a community that relies almost entirely on what volunteers bring in from the outside.
